Models Own Ice Neon in Pukka Purple

7

Models Own are one of my favourite nail varnish brands, mainly because they constantly come up with new and exciting colours and finishes, and they haven’t disappointed with their latest offerings for Spring/Summer.  Last week, Models Own launched their Ice Neon and Fruit Pastel collections in Boots stores, and since I had a £10 Boots voucher to spend I decided to pick up a colour from each.  I couldn’t wait to give them a go, and since we’ve been having a lot of snow lately I decided it would be fitting to use the Ice Neon varnish first, which is the one I will be reviewing today.

The Ice Neon collection features five shades – Bubblegum, Toxic Apple, Luis Lemon, Pink Punch and, the shade I own, Pukka Purple.  Each shade is intensely fluorescent, and comes packaged in a frosted glass bottle which is intended to be stored in the fridge, in order to preserve the vibrancy of the varnish.

??????????????????????

As with every other Models Own varnish that I’ve ever tried, Pukka Purple has a wonderful creamy consistency and applies effortlessly thanks to the easy grip lid and long brush.  The varnish is very opaque, and looks flawless after just one coat, but I still find it necessary to apply two coats in order to intensify the colour.  It also dries impressively quickly – within a few minutes of application I was able to go about my business without any worry of smudges or dents.

All of the Ice Neon varnishes have a matte finish (which may explain why it dries so quickly, as mattes tend to in my experience), but can be made shiny with a gloss top coat.  Unlike some matte varnishes, this one applies well over a base coat, so there’s no need to worry about staining.  Though I love the matte finish of Pukka Purple (which is still a little bit shiny, but not in a glossy way), I did find that it didn’t last too well without a top coat.  Within a day my nails were showing wear at the ends, and after two days the varnish was chipping.  Not ideal, but the amazing colour makes up for the poor lasting power.

Pukka Purple is an absolutely beautiful indigo purple, and is unlike any other purple varnish that I own (and I own a lot!)  I’m not usually a fan of neons as I think they can look quite tacky, but this has the bold brightness of a neon colour but manages to remain classy with its matte finish and blue undertone.  It’s definitely an attention grabber, and has brought me many compliments over the last few days!

Overall, despite its tendency to chip easily, Pukka Purple is a stunningly unusual varnish and boasts Models Own’s characteristic high quality formula.  A definite must if you’re looking for something a little bit different and on trend this season.  All of the Ice Neon collection is available online, individually or in a box set, and can be found in Boots stores around the country.  At £5 each (or £20 for the set) they are kind on the bank account too, and worth every penny.

Check back later this week for my review of Grape Juice from the scented Fruit Pastel collection.

NOTD: Filthy Gorgeous London Nail Polish in ‘Rosey Posey’

6

Yesterday I promised that I would post swatches and reviews of my What’s In My Handbag free gift, so today I thought I would feature the Filthy Gorgeous nail polish that I was sent.  The shade I received is called ‘Rosey Posey’, and retails at £9 for a 10ml bottle.  All of Filthy Gorgeous’ polishes are 3-free as well which is a massive bonus.

I had seen Filthy Gorgeous nail polish on other blogs in the past and was impressed by their eye-catching packaging and wide range of bright colours, so I was very excited when I found this in my gift parcel.  The packaging really doesn’t disappoint with its pleasingly round bottle and pretty lace effect lid, and the guitar pick charm is the icing on the cake.  It gives the polish a rocky edge and is detachable too, so you can wear it on a piece of jewellery or a keyring if you so desire!

Ignoring the product’s image and getting down to the polish itself, I have mixed feelings.  Though the brush bristles are fairly long, a few of them kept bending back on themselves and fanning out when I was using it, which made getting it in and out of the bottle quite difficult.  The consistency of the polish is creamy and not too thick so it applies really nicely, leaving an even coat with no brush strokes.  However, it is a lot more sheer than I was expecting so it took three coats to create an opaque finish, and even then the whites of my nails are still slightly visible.  The drying time of the polish is quite impressive though, only taking around ten minutes to be dry to the touch, but I wouldn’t risk doing anything too hands on for a good hour or so after application.

In terms of colour, ‘Rosey Posey‘ is listed on Filthy Gorgeous’ website as a neon polish which is a ‘warm coral pink’ shade – a spot-on description which I can’t really improve on!  It’s not a shade I’d normally go for as I’m not much of a coral fan, but I like the fact that it is more pink than orange, and I think it is a very pretty, girly shade that I will wear often.  It makes my hands look quite tanned too (not that you can tell in the photo), so Filthy Gorgeous are right when they say it ‘looks perfect with a tan’.  The polish has a glossy creme finish and an impressive shine which makes your nails look flawless too.

So far, the lasting power of this polish is fairly decent.  It survived an hour of swimming today which is great as my polishes often chip after holding onto the hard pool walls, but there is some sign of wear at the tips of a few of my nails after just 24 hours.

Overall, I like this Filthy Gorgeous polish.  The packaging is stunning, it’s a lovely shade and it applies well and dries quickly, but the fact that it took three coats to achieve opaque coverage is quite disappointing for a £9 polish.  I’m not sure I would pay full-price for it, but I’m pleased that I have it in my collection.  Although, having said that, there a couple of shades on the Filthy Gorgeous website that I would love to try, especially Fuchsia Pink 3D Crystal!

Have you tried Filthy Gorgeous nail polish?

Quick Update

1

Hi everyone!

I realise I’ve been quite elusive lately so this is just a quick update from me.  As I keep saying, I’ve had a lot going on but now that university is over for Easter I will have a bit more time to blog!

I was recently tagged in an ‘About Me’ type of post so I will be posting my answers to that tomorrow and then I’ll be tagging a few of you, so keep an eye out for that.  I also have a few reviews lined up, and a little haul post!

One last thing… Today I swatched the purple shade in the new Nails Inc. neon range whilst in Debenhams, and I have to say I’m not impressed!!  The varnish was very watery, the coverage was streaky and it lay disappointingly between shiny and matte.  You’d need a good 4 or 5 coats I should think for it to look passable.  Not good for £11 per bottle!

See you tomorrow lovelies,
Naomi x
