Valentine’s Birthday

9

Yesterday was not only Valentine’s Day but my 23rd birthday, and I was lucky enough to have the day off work to celebrate!  As is tradition, I woke up early to open my cards and presents, and in the afternoon I went for a lovely lunch with my family and partner, Charles.  After lunch, Charles and I walked into town for a wander round and to see the Richard III exhibition at the local museum, before heading home for birthday cake and a game of Balderdash.  It was a relaxed day, but I enjoyed it as I got to spend time with the people I love, and I was given some amazing gifts which I am extremely grateful for!  Here are a few photos from the day…

I was lucky enough to receive everything on my Birthday Wish List this year, and more!  Everything I was given is very ‘me’, and I have quite a few fashion and beauty items to review for you, including Layla, Miss Sporty and Barry M nail varnishes, Sleek Lipstick and Real Techniques make up brushes.  There was also a strong owl theme in my cards and gifts this year…  My mum even bought me a packet of owl print toilet roll as a joke!  Haha.

Charles surprised me with this absolutely beautiful silver necklace which says ‘Everlong’.  Everlong by the Foo Fighters has been my favourite song for years, and when Charles and I got together it became ‘our’ song, so when I saw this I very nearly cried.  I love it so much and I’m going to treasure it forever!

I’m a massive fan of Batman, and Charles’ mum and sister baked me this amazing Batman cake.  The bat is made from dark chocolate, the icing is vanilla and chocolate buttercream, and the sponge inside is coloured green and purple like the Joker.  How cool is that?

We are currently decorating our hallway and the walls were completely bare yesterday, so I decided to write a little note on the plaster for future generations to find one day when I’m old and grey.

Seeing as I had a casual day, I decided to wear a casual outfit for my birthday.  I settled for a pink dress top with romantic lace sleeves and purple skinny jeans, both from H&M, and my trusty purple Dr Martens.  Oh, and my Everlong necklace of course!

And true to kitty form, my cat Moth loved playing with all the wrapping paper and gift bags!

What did you do for Valentine’s Day this year?  Did you get anything nice from your loved one?

A February Weekend in London

9

On Sunday, my other half and I went to London for two days of early birthday fun.  It was really lovely to have a bit of a break from all the stresses of work and university, and we managed to fit everything in that we wanted to do.  I took hundreds of photos whilst we there, so I thought I’d share a few of them with you now and tell you what we got up to!

My main reason for wanting to go to London during cold, grey February was to see an art installation at the Barbican Art Gallery called the Rain Room.  The Rain Room is the latest piece by an art collective called rAndom International, who specialise in digital-based contemporary art.  The Rain Room is basically a black room, lit by one bright light, where rain falls from the ceiling, and visitors can control the rain by walking through it.  As you pass through, the rain above you stops, so you can walk within the water without getting wet – a truly strange but incredible experience!

When we first got to the gallery there was a sign up to say the queueing time would be four hours, but that didn’t put us off!  Luckily, we only queued for two hours in the end, which is still a long time but it was well worth the wait.  I really enjoyed being part of the interactive and carefully choreographed performance that is the Rain Room, and if you’re in London any time soon I highly recommend you give it a visit.  It’s hard to explain just how awe-inspiring it really is!  The Rain Room will be at the Barbican until the 3rd of March, and you can read more about it here.

After our visit to the Rain Room we decided to check-in at our hotel in Waterloo, and then we went for dinner at Giraffe on the Southbank.  I’d never been to Giraffe before, and the food was quite tasty.  I had a Falafel “Deluxe” Burger which was stuffed full of falafel, halloumi, grilled peppers, houmous, beetroot, tzatziki and harissa – lots of my favourite flavours – and it was beautiful, but the service wasn’t the best, unfortunately.  I’d definitely go again though!  After our meal, we went for an impromptu walk along the Southbank, and it soon turned in to a long two-hour walk around central London to admire the tourist spots lit up at night.

On our second day in the city we decided to go to London Zoo.  I’m not always a fan of zoos, but London Zoo focuses on worldwide animal conservation, which I am happy to support.  I didn’t expect to stay at the zoo for long, but there was so much to do and see we were there until (almost) closing time!  The zoo staff hold regular talks throughout the day, and we got to see the penguins and giraffes being fed, and we listened in on a talk about the rainforest animals they have there, which was great.  The highlight of our visit to the zoo, for me, was getting to see fruit bats up close as they are one of my favourite animals, but the meerkats were also extremely amusing!

After the zoo we walked into Camden for some food, before taking the Tube to Oxford Street for a spot of shopping.  I didn’t buy much in the end, but I did get a cute skull bag from Primark, and we stopped off at Hummingbird Bakery for a Black Bottom Cupcake, before heading to St Pancras station to catch the train home.

Though we both suffered from very achy feet after two days of constant walking, we enjoyed every minute of our weekend in London.  I always love going to London for a few days as I find it such a fascinating city, and there’s always something new to do.  Here’s hoping I can get away again later in the year!

My Week: Bats, Baking, Birthdays and Bouncing!

4

Hi all,

You may have noticed that I haven’t been around a lot this week, and there are several reasons for my absence!  I have had a lot to do over the last few days, all rather unrelated to beauty, but all quite fun so I thought I would share :)

On Friday I went to a Bat and Moth Night at my university.  I have been fascinated by bats since I was very small and I love to see them whenever I can, so I dragged my fiancé along for the bat night!  After cheese, wine and hot chocolate, a large group of us went for an (almost) midnight walk around the local cemetery to look for bats and we managed to spot quite a few!  I was even put in charge of a bat detector so I got to listen to the bats as well, so cute!

I also spent a good deal of Thursday and Friday baking.  Last week my Grandma celebrated her 80th Birthday, and this weekend she had a big party at her house for family and friends.  I had already baked her a cake for her birthday, but I decided to make an even bigger and better one for the party.  On Thursday I spent hours making butterflies and lettering for decoration, and on Friday I did the actual baking, making and decorating.  This was the finished result… What do you think?  I’m quite proud of how well it turned out!

Yesterday was the actual party.  We were a little worried that the weather wasn’t going to be very good, but though it wasn’t amazingly sunny, it didn’t rain, which meant only one thing…  BOUNCY CASTLE!  My cousins, sister, fiancé and I spent most of the day bouncing away, which was a lot of fun.  I was knackered by the end of it though!  The party was really nice and it was lovely to see my Grandma surrounded by everyone she cares about :)

And of course, today was Father’s Day, so my sister and I spent the whole day with my brilliant Dad.  We went to one of our favourite natural parks, taking photos and enjoying the sun.  I loved it and so did he.

So, that’s what I’ve been doing lately instead of blogging, but I’ll be back as of tomorrow with some fun posts!  What have you been up to this week?

Naomi xx
