Loot Crate Villains 2

1

It’s been a while since I last signed up to a (non-edible!) subscription box, and I’d been missing that buzz of getting a nice surprise through the post each month, so lately I’ve been on the lookout for a new one to trial. I was looking for something featuring collectible items rather than beauty products or anything like that, and I knew exactly where to turn for recommendations. One of my favourite bloggers, Chrissie of Plus10Kapow, regularly reviews popular subscription boxes, and after seeing her publish several positive reviews about Loot Crate, I decided to take the plunge and sign up for a one-off box, just to see whether I like it or not.

Loot Crate are a US-based company founded in 2012, who each month ‘ships a themed mystery box of the best geek, gaming, and pop culture gear to a subscriber base of over 100,000 Looters’.  From what I’ve seen their boxes are always well thought out and beautifully curated to suit a theme – something that a lot of other subscription services just don’t quite manage to get the hang of. The box I signed up for was the August Villains 2 box, which is quite possibly one of the best themes for me as I do love myself a supervillain! Loot Crate released their first Villains box last year, and this one is the sequel to that.

I ordered my crate on 19th August, and after much impatient waiting it finally arrived on 1st September, which was a little later than most people’s, so it was incredibly difficult to avoid content spoilers online!

I was expecting to find six or seven items in the box, as this seems to be the norm according to the reviews I’ve seen, but this month there were only four (plus the usual magazine and badge). However, all four items are high-end and good quality, and according to Chrissie’s calculations are worth a whopping £65.04 if bought separately online!

So, here’s all the loot!

Captain America Hydra Pin Badge

DSC_1046 (800x532)

Pins and badges are one of the many things that I collect, so it was nice to find one of such great quality in the box.  This Hydra pin is very well made, and has a double pin on the back.  I reckon this would look awesome on a simple black jacket.

DC Collectibles Wooden Joker

DSC_1051 (800x531) DSC_1054 (800x533)

As a lifelong Batman fan this wooden Joker figure was my absolute favourite item in the crate.  There’s just something so nostalgic about it as I remember having toys like this when I was younger, and the changeable faces and poseable arms make this figure even more fun.  I can see myself collecting more of these in the future (I’ve got my eye on a Batman one I’ve seen), but this one is extra special as it’s a Loot Crate exclusive.

Carnage 16oz Mug

DSC_1064 (532x800)

There were two villainous mug designs being sent out in this crate – Venom, and Carnage, which is the one I received.  My fiancé is more of a Marvel fan than I am (I’m a DC girl), so he was especially pleased with this.  The mug is a good size and makes a nice addition to our ever-expanding mug collection, although for some reason I can see it being used for make up brushes or pens rather than tea!

Los Pollos Hermanos Apron

DSC_1069 (800x532)

I love Breaking Bad and I do a lot of cooking, so this apron was a great addition to the box.  The quality of the apron is really high, and the colours are nice and vibrant (although you can’t tell in the picture… my camera dislikes yellow for some reason!).  This is something that I’d probably buy myself, and the exact same apron is currently being sold on Amazon for over £14.

Badge and Magazine

DSC_1044 (800x532) DSC_1058 (800x532) (2)

Every Loot Crate includes a badge to match the monthly theme, and a magazine. This month’s badge feature’s Venom’s spiky smile, and I absolutely love the Joker art on the front of the magazine. When I first saw the magazine at the bottom of the box I thought it was a print, which really excited me as I’d definitely hang this on my wall.  In fact, I was slightly disappointed that it wasn’t. Perhaps something for Loot Crate to consider in the future?

So, after receiving my first Loot Crate I must say I’m impressed.  Everything about it is fantastic – the premium items, the attention to detail, even the fun design inside the box.  A monthly subscription to Loot Crate costs just under $30 (about £20), or you can sign up for 3 month, 6 month of yearly packages at a discounted rate. I had a $3 off discount code and ordered a monthly box, making this one $26.95 (a little over £18), with free delivery. For what you get, and the combined total worth of each item, the Villains 2 box was without a doubt worth the money. I’m definitely considering keeping my subscription open for longer!

Are you signed up to Loot Crate? What were your thoughts on the Villains 2 crate?

Christmas Swap Box with +10 Kapow

1

I absolutely love putting together gift boxes for people, and of course I love surprises myself, so a little while ago I suggested to Chrissie of +10 Kapow that we do a Christmas Swap, and luckily she was up for the idea!  We decided on a budget of £20, and agreed to fill a shoebox with little gifts that we thought the other would like.  I had a lot of fun searching for items to give to Chrissie, and after a few weeks of browsing, buying and wrapping, the box was ready to send.  Our deadline for posting was 5th December, and last week we each received our box of goodies!

As both of us are impatient we decided to open and blog about our gifts before Christmas, so without further ado, here’s what I received!

As you can see, my swap from Chrissie came beautifully packaged.  The box itself is stunning, and puts the cardboard one I sent her to shame!  I’ll definitely be using it to store things in, probably rings or nail varnishes.

There were eight wrapped gifts in the box, including a jewellery box which I was really excited about.  I hurriedly unwrapped everything, and was delighted with all that Chrissie sent.  I must say she chose well!  Here’s what I got…

The first gift is this Baked Merged Trio Eyeshadow from MUA, in shade ‘Emotions’.  All three shades have a slight shimmer to them, and are impressively pigmented.  The neutral tones are perfect for a daytime look, and I can see myself using these shades a lot for a work make up look, although with some dramatic eyeliner they could easily be dressed up.

DSC_0848 (800x532)

My lips get very dry at this time of year, so finding this Nivea Lip Butter in the box was much appreciated!  The lip butter feels lovely and nourishing, and smells amazing too, like vanilla and macadamia.  This has now become a winter essential for me and comes everywhere with me.

DSC_0854 (800x532)

I spotted this Body Shop Glazed Apple Body Butter when browsing The Body Shop website a few weeks, and was really intrigued by it, so as you can imagine I was pleased to find this in the box too!  I use body butters on a daily basis and have done for years, so this was very well chosen, and is incredibly moisturising.  The Glazed Apple scent is lovely too – fruity, but also sweet and creamy.

DSC_0860 (800x532)

Yet another product that I’ve been wanting to try – MUA Luxe Velvet Lips!  This shade is called ‘Serene’, and is a dark peach shade with a pink undertone.  It’s very highly pigmented, has a creamy texture so applies beautifully, and is long-lasting.  I like it, and aesthetically, I also like the frosted tube.

This awesome keyring is triple awesome – it’s Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I’ve loved since I was a kid, he’s a rat, and it’s lego!  I’m going to hang this from my bag because I’m cool like that.  Isn’t he fab?!

DSC_0880 (800x532)

Chrissie made this galaxy necklace herself, and it’s my favourite item that she sent me.  It’s really well made, and purple, pink and turquoise happen to be my favourite colours.  I’ve been wearing it a lot since I got it, sometimes alone, but also layered with a couple of my other favourite necklaces, which I think looks great on a plain top.

DSC_0867 (531x800)

Batman!  A Batman ring!  I’m sure it’s clear by now that I’m a big Batman fan, and this ring is absolutely fab.  I really like how subtle it is, whilst also being super cool.

DSC_0872 (532x800)

This pretty galaxy scarf has the same colour palette as the necklace Chrissie made, and is so soft and snuggly and warm.  I’ve been wearing this lately to add a splash of colour to some of my darker winter outfits, and it seems to attract compliments!

DSC_0883 (800x532)

Purple shades and holo effects are two of my favourite things to decorate my nails with, so this nail polish from Freckles Polish is perfect for me.  The shade is called ‘I’ll Need Wine’, and is a rich purple colour, a bit like red wine, with a beautiful holo shimmer.  Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of me wearing it, but it applies nicely and is stunning on – fabulous for the festive season.  Chrissie recently sent me some stamping plates too, so I plan on creating some looks soon using them and this polish, which I’ll be posting about soon.

I’m really happy with everything Chrissie sent me (thanks Chrissie!), and I hope we can do another swap one day!  To see what I sent Chrissie in return, you can check out her post here.

Have you taken part in any Christmas swaps this year?  If so, what did you send/receive?  I’d love to see your posts about it!

Valentine’s Birthday

9

Yesterday was not only Valentine’s Day but my 23rd birthday, and I was lucky enough to have the day off work to celebrate!  As is tradition, I woke up early to open my cards and presents, and in the afternoon I went for a lovely lunch with my family and partner, Charles.  After lunch, Charles and I walked into town for a wander round and to see the Richard III exhibition at the local museum, before heading home for birthday cake and a game of Balderdash.  It was a relaxed day, but I enjoyed it as I got to spend time with the people I love, and I was given some amazing gifts which I am extremely grateful for!  Here are a few photos from the day…

??????????????????????

??????????????????????

I was lucky enough to receive everything on my Birthday Wish List this year, and more!  Everything I was given is very ‘me’, and I have quite a few fashion and beauty items to review for you, including Layla, Miss Sporty and Barry M nail varnishes, Sleek Lipstick and Real Techniques make up brushes.  There was also a strong owl theme in my cards and gifts this year…  My mum even bought me a packet of owl print toilet roll as a joke!  Haha.

??????????????????????

Charles surprised me with this absolutely beautiful silver necklace which says ‘Everlong’.  Everlong by the Foo Fighters has been my favourite song for years, and when Charles and I got together it became ‘our’ song, so when I saw this I very nearly cried.  I love it so much and I’m going to treasure it forever!

I’m a massive fan of Batman, and Charles’ mum and sister baked me this amazing Batman cake.  The bat is made from dark chocolate, the icing is vanilla and chocolate buttercream, and the sponge inside is coloured green and purple like the Joker.  How cool is that?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We are currently decorating our hallway and the walls were completely bare yesterday, so I decided to write a little note on the plaster for future generations to find one day when I’m old and grey.

??????????????????????

Seeing as I had a casual day, I decided to wear a casual outfit for my birthday.  I settled for a pink dress top with romantic lace sleeves and purple skinny jeans, both from H&M, and my trusty purple Dr Martens.  Oh, and my Everlong necklace of course!

??????????????????????

And true to kitty form, my cat Moth loved playing with all the wrapping paper and gift bags!

What did you do for Valentine’s Day this year?  Did you get anything nice from your loved one?

Fashion and Beauty Christmas Haul

6

Well!  After weeks of preparation – shopping, cooking and decorating – Christmas Day has been and gone, and we’re all probably a few pounds heavier than we were this time last week!  I hope you all had a wonderful time, celebrating in your chosen way with the people you love, and I hope Santa brought you everything you wished for.  I personally had a great time!  The highlight of Christmas for me is playing games and doing quizzes with my family, and they were definitely done in abundance.

Christmas isn’t just about the presents, but I got some really lovely fashion and beauty related things this year, so I thought I would share them with you today.  I also got a lot of chocolate, baking equipment, geeky stuff (including a bat detector which I’ve been wanting for AGES) and books – my friends and relatives know me well!

So, here are some of my Christmas gifts.  Apologies for the strange colouring in a few of the photographs…  They were taken in bad lighting!

O

My dad bought me this absolutely beautiful sterling silver Bat Skull necklace.  He mentioned that he got it from Etsy and it was handmade in New York by an obviously very talented maker.  I instantly fell in love with it when I opened the box, and in my surprise I ended up dropping the box in my mug of tea, woops!  I adore bats so I am going to treasure this piece.

O

I also love hares, so my dad gave me this large pewter moon hare pendant as well.  Isn’t it stunning?  I need to find a chain for this pronto so I can start wearing it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The dinosaur at the top was from my sister, Rex from Toy Story was from my fiancé, and the owl was from my fiancé’s sister.  Owls, dinosaurs and necklaces are a few of my favourite things, so I was very pleased to receive all three of these beauties.

O

I received three different perfumes this year, all of which are replacements for perfumes I already have.  Cacharel’s Amor Amor (one of my all time favourites), Vera Wang Princess Night, and an Accessorize Gift Set.

O

O

I didn’t get much make up this year, but my cousin gave me 17’s Smoky Eye Palette and a few little 17 lip glosses.  The red gloss is gorgeous!  The guy at the bottom is a rather cute owl lip balm.

O

How amazing are these?!  My fiancé’s sister gave me these Batman nail transfers.  I was so excited when I opened them and I cannot wait to give them a go.  Definitely expect a review of these soon.

O

This cat bag from my mum was one of my favourite gifts this year.  It’s big and furry and very soft – it needs to stop raining now so I can use it!

O

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a scarf, gloves or socks, and this year I got all three.  The scarf is purple with green skulls and is nice and light – ideal for spring.  The socks have squirrels on them, one of my favourite animals, and the rainbow mitten gloves are SO SNUGGLY – win!

??????????????????????

Not the best photo in the world but my mum got me a BATMAN ONESIE!  Amazing, right?

A massive thank you to everyone who spoilt me this year, I am extremely grateful.  Did you get anything fashion and beauty related for Christmas this year?  I’d love to see your hauls too!

Batman Day: Selina Kyle/Catwoman Inspired Make Up

1

I have officially named today Batman Day, because today (finally) I went to see The Dark Knight Rises at the cinema!  I have been Batman obsessed since I was a small child and have seen pretty much every Batman film that has ever been made.  The Christopher Nolan trilogy has been by far my favourite set of films, and the big finale didn’t disappoint.  I’m saying nothing though, just in case any of you are yet to see it :)  In a move of unashamed geekery, I decided to give my make-up a Batman theme today, and what could be more fitting than a Selina Kyle based look?  The brilliant Anne Hathaway plays Selina/Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, and her distinctive look has been adorning posters for months, and I had been wanting to recreate her pale face and pink cheeks, bold red lips and dark smokey eyes for a while, so today I did.

Here is the make up that I used for this classic look:

  • Avon Ideal Shade Cream to Powder Foundation in ‘Ivory’
  • Avon Ideal Shade Pressed Powder in ‘Fair’
  • Avon Colortrend Perfect and Hide Concealer in ‘Light’
  • The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain
  • Avon Glimmerstick Eye Liner in ‘Blackest Black’
  • Jillian Dempsey for Avon Professional Kohl in ‘Charcoal’
  • Avon SuperCurlacious Mascara in ‘Black’
  • MUA Lip Boom (just the lipstick) in ‘Bring It’

And here is my Catwoman-inspired look!

This look is very easy to create…  Over moisturiser I applied the Cream to Powder Foundation, Concealer, and a very fine layer of Pressed Powder.  I then lined my waterline with the Glimmerstick Eye Liner and smudged the Avon Professional Kohl under my eyes and over my top lashline, before drawing one more line on my top lashline with the Kohl.  Next I added two coats of SuperCurlacious Mascara, and finally I filled in my lips with MUA’s Lip Boom.  Easy!

I hope you like my Catwoman look, and if you’re going to see the film, enjoy it!  For those who have already seen it…  What did you think?  I really loved seeing Nottingham’s Wollaton Hall in the film as it’s so close to where I live!
