Birthday Wish List
4Evening all!
Firstly, I would like to apologise for my elusiveness lately. January has been an incredibly busy month for me but it seems to have dragged on forever – I’m sure many of you can relate to that feeling! On top of starting back at work after Christmas, I had an important assignment to do for my Master’s Degree this month, so I spent most of my evenings researching, writing and editing, hence my lack of blog posts. Luckily, I handed the assignment in yesterday so I’ll have a bit more time on my hands now (although I do have a dissertation proposal to complete…), so expect to see a lot more from me during February!
Hopefully February will be a bit more fun than January has been. On Sunday my fiancé and I are going to London, just for one night, but we have a lot planned. I will be taking my camera on the trip so expect a rather photo heavy post when I get back! Also, Bewitchery turns one year old on the 7th of February, which is very exciting indeed. The main event in February for me though is my birthday! On the 14th of February I turn 23, and (fingers crossed) I won’t be working that day, so I am going to spend the next couple of weeks planning fun things to do! Birthdays for me are mostly about surprises, cake and having a nice time with my loved ones, but I do have a few things on my Birthday Wish List this year, so I thought I would share them with you here…
Dr Martens Grace Denise 8 Big Eye Boots
If you’ve read this post, you’ll know that I’m a Dr Martens fangirl, and I have been lusting after this pair for months now. I recently noticed that they were in the Schuh sale, so I dropped a massive hint with my dad and I think these babies will be mine in two weeks time!
Layla Hologram Effect Nail Polish
I know I’m extremely late to the hologram polish party, but I really love the look of Layla’s hologram range, especially this Ultra Violet shade.
Real Techniques Core Collection
I’ve been after a decent set of make up brushes for a long, long time (my current set are falling apart), and lots of you lovely beauty bloggers have recommended Real Techniques’ Core Collection. I’ve done some research, and they really do look like a quality set of brushes, so these are now on my list. They pass the cruelty free test too!
Real Techniques Starter Set
Because my eyes deserve fabulous brushes too… And they’re purple!
Kate Bush T-Shirt
Kate Brush is my hero, and has been since I was tiny, so this t-shirt is perfect for me. The design is just so pretty!
Sleek True Colour Lipstick in Smother
This is one of Sleek’s newest shades in their True Colour Lipstick range. It’s an extremely pretty pinky purple colour (it’s actually a bit darker in reality than it looks in the picture), and every time I go to Superdrug I can’t resist swatching it on my hand.

Chocolate Tasting for Millennium Hotels
7Last week I received a very special delivery from Millennium Hotels… A goody bag stuffed full of Hotel Chocolat treats! Millennium Hotels are a luxury hotel company who have many hotels and resorts in exciting locations all around the world. To add something a little extra special to every room, they are currently trying to choose a luxury chocolate to place on their pillows for their guests, and I was asked along with a few other bloggers to help them choose by sampling each chocolate in the goody bag. How could I say no to that?! Here is what the bag contains…
From Left to Right:
Smiley Lick.
Eton Mess Slab.
Salted Caramels.
Chocolate Gemstones.
Billionaire’s Shortbread.
Choosing a favourite out of these five delectable delights is very difficult (I am a chocoholic, after all), as they are all different, and all extremely delicious. However, a decision has been made! Read on to see what I thought of each one, and to see which one is my overall winner.
Smiley Lick
The Smiley Lick consists of a disk of thick milk chocolate on a lollipop stick, which is happily adorned with a smiley face. This one is fun to look at, fun to nibble and it really shows off the high quality of Hotel Chocolat’s chocolate. The chocolate is extremely smooth and has a rich, sweet flavour. I gobbled this up rather quickly in one sitting, and was left wanting more. Delicious, but I don’t think it’s quite right for a hotel pillow as it’s a bit too bulky looking!
Eton Mess Slab
The Eton Mess slab is absolutely beautiful to look at, as the pink chocolate swirled with cream and scattered with strawberry and meringue pieces makes it look like a work of art. The chocolate itself is strawberry flavoured, with vanilla chocolate running throughout. It isn’t as smooth as the milk chocolate as the real fruit bits give it a bit more texture, as do the little chocolate cookies hidden inside (which I wasn’t expecting when I first bit into it!), but it is divine!
If you have a sweet tooth then this is definitely for you – it smells and tastes just like a strawberry milkshake. I can only handle a little bit of this at a time, but at least that means I can make the bar last and savour it. This would be the winner if my sister had a say – it was her favourite out of all five choices.
Salted Caramels
I have always enjoyed the contrast between sweet chocolate and salty caramel, and these are the best salted caramels I have ever tried – the balance of flavours is perfect! When you first bite into the chocolate the caramel comes oozing out, and you are hit with a toffee sweetness which has a slight tang of sea salt. These perhaps wouldn’t be to everybody’s taste, but I think they’re a very sophisticated little treat and I’d definitely have these again.
Chocolate Gemstones
Hotel Chocolat’s Gemstones are made of white and dark chocolate drops, which have been fused together to create silky and shiny little spheres, which melt slowly on the tongue. They might be small, but each one gives big flavour, with a creaminess from the white chocolate and a bitter edge from the dark chocolate which stops them being overly sweet. Out of everything in the goody bag, these are the ones I keep going back to… They’re very moreish!
Billionaire’s Shortbread
Last but not least, Billionaire’s Shortbread. These unusual truffles are made of milk chocolate, and have a caramel praline inside which has a lovely soft texture. Each one is also sprinkled with little pieces of shortbread cookie, which add a delicious crunch to every bite. These really do taste just like the dessert of the same name, but their delicate size makes them that little bit more refined. My other half absolutely loves the Billionaire’s Shortbread chocolates and I think these would win if it was his choice!
Though I like everything in the goody bag, my overall winner has to be the Gemstones! They might be the simplest chocolate of them all, but I think that would make them suitable for any guest to enjoy, and their beautiful taste and dainty size make them the ideal snack to nibble on throughout the evening, whilst you lounge in your comfortable hotel room. Bliss!
If you fancy a stay at a 4 Star Millennium Hotel (I know I’d love to stay at the London Mayfair hotel myself), now is a good time to book… They are currently offering 30% off room rates until the end of March, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this could be a lovely way to impress your loved one! Click here to find out more, and don’t forget to treat them to some Hotel Chocolat chocolates too.

Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Velocity
9Earlier this month, not long after I decided to ban myself from spending for a while, I received an email from Illamasqua to say that they had added more lines to their winter sale, and I couldn’t resist a browse. There were so many lovely things going cheap that I had to restrain myself, but I made a compromise and let myself buy two things that I wanted the most – a gorgeous red lipstick in the shade Tramp (which I will review at a later date), and this beautiful nail varnish, Velocity.
Illamasqua nail varnish usually retails for £13.50, but Velocity cost me just £5 in the sale, which is obviously a massive saving. I love Illamasqua for several reasons – they’re British, they’re cruelty-free, they challenge conventions, their packaging is chic and, importantly, their products are amazing quality, and this varnish is no different.
Velocity is a very beautiful shade with a bit of an edge, which oozes individuality and class. Illamasqua’s website describes it as a dusky grey-purple which is spot on, and it looks fantastic no matter what level of light you’re in. In natural light it looks the colour of vibrant purple heather, with a tinge of grey which stops it being overly bright, and indoors it has a deep plum look to it, which is equally as gorgeous. The varnish also has a glossy finish which gives incredible, eye-catching shine.
The varnish itself has a lovely creamy consistency, which when paired with Illamasqua’s quality varnish brush allows for smooth, easy coverage. It’s also very highly pigmented and gives full coverage with only one coat, but I applied two for a more intense look. The varnish dries quickly too… I was playing Balderdash with my family about ten minutes after painting my nails with Velocity, and I didn’t suffer any smudges or dents!
I’m also really impressed with how long this has lasted so far. For some reason, I didn’t apply a top coat over the top, and after three days the varnish is still wearing well. One nail on my left hand has chipped a bit, but the rest look almost as good as new!
Here is how Velocity looks on the nails, in natural light, after two coats…
I really can’t put into words how much I love this varnish! The colour is stunning and you can really tell when using it that it’s a good quality product. I would happily pay full-price for Illamasqua nail varnish, so I feel very lucky that I managed to get this little gem for only £5. If you want to follow in my footsteps, it’s actually still available in the sale here, but be quick because I think the sale ends soon!
Which Illamasqua nail varnish shade is your favourite?

The Budget Beauty Blogger Swap – Time to Swap!
2Good news, swappers – today is the day that you will find out who you have been paired with! Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has joined my Budget Beauty Blogger Swap, because without you, there wouldn’t be a swap! I had an overwhelming response from UK bloggers, so unfortunately I couldn’t pair everyone with overseas bloggers, but I’m sure you’ll all still have a fun time swapping! Also, I had a few issues getting hold of a couple of people’s email addresses and blog links, so if you still want to take part and you don’t hear from me today, please let me know and I will sort something out.
I will be emailing everyone the details of their swap partner later today, and here’s what happens next…
*The budget for this swap is £10/$16/€12. Please spend the full amount.*
- Once you have your partner’s contact details, it is up to you to get in touch with them and exchange postal addresses. It might also be a good idea to tell each other your colour preferences and what types of products you like and dislike, to ensure that your partner can choose products that are suitable for you.
- It’s then time to shop – I hope you all have fun choosing budget beauty products for your partner!
- Once you have put together a nice little collection of products, package them up and pop them in the post to you partner (if sending abroad you may need to declare what’s in the parcel, so make sure you know the guidelines of the country you’re sending to). Please obtain proof of postage when posting and email an image of it to your partner, just to prove that it’s on its way. Then wait!
- When you’ve received your parcel, please blog about what you’ve been sent and then link me to it so I can share everyone’s posts.
PLEASE NOTE: There are restrictions on sending nail varnish, perfume and aerosols via the Royal Mail, so it is probably best to avoid sending any!
If possible, please have your parcel packaged and sent within 2 weeks, and don’t forget to get proof of postage when you do send it and let your partner know when it’s on its way. I’m sure none of you would like to miss out on receiving a package, so lets keep everything fair and make this a successful swap!
Happy Swapping! I hope you’re all as excited about this as I am.

Disclaimer: I am organising the swap, but once I put people in touch with their partners I cannot be responsible for anything that goes wrong, so please play fair!

Philosophy 2 Piece Foot Pampering Set
8If, like me, you spend the majority of the day rushing around after one thing or another, you more than likely dream of a relaxing way to pamper your feet at the end of a long day, which won’t take hours or cost the earth. If so, then look no further, as Philosophy’s 2 Piece Foot Pampering Set has all the answers!
I’ve seen Philosophy featured on many blogs in the past, and their products seem to be very popular in the world of beauty, and after trying these two foot treats I can see why. The set contains a 120ml tube of Footnotes, an energizing foot scrub, and a 93g tube of Soul Owner, an exfoliating foot cream. I’ve always loved Philosophy’s simple packaging and quirky product names, and these two have both. The products are intended to be used one after the other, starting with Footnotes and finishing with Soul Owner.
Footnotes is a lovely mint green shade, and has an intense but refreshing scent of lavender and eucalyptus. The scrub works best when applied to dry feet, and I find a generous 10p coin-sized amount is plenty enough for one foot. Footnotes has a gel-like consistency and is packed full of micro granules of pumice, which are very fine, so no amount of rubbing makes your skin sore, as can happen with chunkier, lower quality exfoliators. The tube suggests that the scrub can be used with a pumice stone, but I prefer to massage it in with my hands, in a circular motion, focusing on any rough patches. The balls and heels of my feet are quite dry, and the exfoliating properties of this scrub have really helped to smooth these areas, softening them nicely so they’re almost back to normal after just a few uses – an impressive result! After you’ve finished scrubbing, whatever’s left on your feet should be washed off thoroughly with warm water. The eucalyptus content in Footnotes makes your feet feel cooled and very clean after use, and the effect lasts for a long time.
The next stage in Philosophy’s foot pamper session is to apply a liberal amount of Soul Owner to your entire foot area. Like Footnotes, Soul Owner is enriched with eucalyptus essential oil, so the two complement each other to give maximum tingly freshness with minimum effort. My feet always feel so awake and alive after using this set! Despite being labelled as an ‘exfoliating foot cream’, the cream itself isn’t rough or gritty, but is richly creamy and smooth. The exfoliating properties actually come from glycolic and salicylic acids, which help to reduce rough soles. The cream massages in extremely quickly, leaving behind no greasy residue, making your skin feel intensely moisturised and happy.
The results that this Philosophy 2 Piece Foot Pampering Set give are impressive. All it takes is a few minutes to instantly refresh, soften and smooth tired feet.
The set is available to buy here from QVC UK, and costs £22.25. QVC also stock a wide range of other Philosophy and Skincare products, so why not see what else they have to offer, too!
Have you ever tried anything by Philosophy?

Nails Inc Bling It On Leather & Skulls
162013 is set to be another big year for textured nails, and the latest trend is the unusual leather look. Nails Inc recently launched their Bling It On Leather & Skulls set, and it has been causing a big buzz in the world of beauty. I am always keen to try out new and exciting nail effects and I was really intrigued by this when I first heard about it, so I was very pleased to be sent a set to review, from lookfantastic.com.
Bling It On Leather is available in Black or Tan (which is the shade I have), and the set contains a 10ml bottle of Leather Effect polish, four skull embellishments, a 3g bottle of nail glue and a cuticle stick – everything you need to create gorgeous, stand-out nails!
The nail polish shade in the tan set is called Soho Mews, and is a lovely caramel brown colour, tinged with orange. The polish itself is very creamy and highly pigmented, and I found it only took one coat to achieve an opaque, even finish. However, I applied two coats as the instructions suggest. Getting the leather look is very simple, as the polish does all the work for you. Like a crackle varnish, Leather Effect goes on glossy, and before your eyes it develops a leathery textured, matte finish in just seconds. Once the effect has formed, the polish is also completely dry, which is really quite impressive.
If you wanted to dress the Leather Look down for work or day wear you could stop there, but the set also contains four skulls which would be perfect for an evening look. The skull embellishments are made of a gold coloured metal and are studded with tiny crystal gems. They’re actually surprisingly detailed and beautiful for a nail embellishment, and give the leather effect a glamorous yet rocky edge. The instructions say to pick the skulls up with tweezers, before applying a small amount of the glue to the corners and centre of the skull before placing it on to your chosen nail. If you’re careful, you won’t make a mess with the glue, and the skull will stay put. If you’re extra careful, you can remove the skull before taking the varnish off and use it again!
The final look you get with the leather polish and skulls is one of beauty. If, like me, you do everything in your power to keep your newly painted nails glossy and smudge-free, the Leather Effect may take some getting used to, but it really does look like leather and the colour is stunning! Here are two swatch photos to show you how fabulous this look is.
Without skull, to show the Leather Effect.
With skull.
The only downside to the Leather Effect is that it soon chips. To keep the matte finish I didn’t apply a top coat, and within 24 hours the varnish had chipped. However, if you change your varnish regularly this shouldn’t be much of an issue, and if you’re wearing it for a night out then chances are you’ll be removing it within a day anyway.
If you like the look of Nails Inc Bling It On Leather & Skulls, you can order it now for £19 (with FREE worldwide delivery) from LookFantastic, in the classy shade of black – a worthy investment for fans of chic nails and current trends! LookFantastic also stock many other nail brands, including O.P.I, Essie and Butter London. To view their full range, visit here!

Tropic Pure Plant Skin Care Lip Love Balm
3As I’m sure many of you will have found out the hard way, the cold, harsh winter weather can cause damage to your skin, especially your lips, leaving them sore and dry. As such, I find it is essential to use a good lip balm regularly to combat this damage, and I have found the ideal balm in Tropic Skin Care’s Lip Love Balm, as it is not only great for your lips, but can be used to protect other areas of dry skin too.
Tropic Pure Plant Skin Care was launched in 2007, and has three main principles – their products are Pure, their pricing is Honest, and they are also Effective. Everything in the Tropic range is vegan, which is great news for veggies like me, and it’s all made from completely natural plant extracts, so is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. The company is also keen to reduce its carbon footprint so they use recyclable, sustainable packaging materials wherever possible. Tropic’s ethical image really appeals to me as my aim for 2013 is to go completely cruelty free, and to top it all off their products are wonderful too. Here’s what I thought of their Lip Love Balm…
Tropic’s Lip Love Balm comes in a dainty 10ml pot, which is the perfect size to carry with you in your pocket or bag. The packaging is simple, but the orange metallic lid makes it stand out, giving it a more luxurious look than the average lip balm. The lid is also a screw top, a minor detail which is actually quite important, as it won’t fall off in your bag like press on lids sometimes do!
As you can see from the photo above, every single ingredient in the lip balm is natural, and comfortingly recognisable, meaning you don’t have to worry about any nasty chemicals damaging the delicate skin of your lips. Rather, each natural plant extract combines to form a beautiful, versatile lip balm. Believe me, once you’ve tried it you’ll be a convert!
In the pot the balm looks a stunning sunset orange colour, and it gives your lips a gorgeous golden tint. The balm isn’t strongly scented, but it has a sweet, subtle aroma of lemon, orange and peppermint, which is really quite refreshing as the peppermint adds a slight cooling effect.
Lip Love Balm has a soft, creamy texture and is easily applied with a fingertip. Thanks to the nourishing Shea and Cocoa butters, it feels intensely moisturising on the lips and forms a long-lasting protective layer which helps heal dry and cracked skin – perfect for this time of year! I’ve been using this for about a week now, and I have already noticed a big difference. My lips have shed their winter dryness so look a lot healthier, and feel a lot softer, which I’m very happy about. The balm isn’t greasy either, yet it makes your lips look incredibly shiny, and works really well over matte lipstick – it keeps it in place for a lot longer than usual and gives it a lovely glossy sheen.
As I mentioned earlier, Tropic’s Love Balm is also great for hydrating other areas of skin. Their website states that it can be used on your nails, cuticles, elbows and heels, but I’ve also been using it on my knuckles as they’re quite dry, and it’s been working wonders. My favourite alternative use, however, is as a cuticle cream. My cuticles have taken a bit of a battering over the past few months, what with all the nail varnish I’ve been using, and again because of the cold weather, and as a result haven’t been looking their best. Impressively, I found that within a few days of using the balm on my cuticles every morning, they were a lot neater and more supple. Carrot oil, avocado, rosehip and macadamia are known for their skin renewing properties, and for improving skin elasticity, and their concentrated levels in this balm really help it to work its magic very quickly.
Tropic Skin Care Lip Love Balm costs just £5.00, and considering the small amount you need to feel the benefits and make a difference, it really is worth every penny. If you’re looking for a high quality, multipurpose balm to take you through winter and into spring then this is definitely it – choosing natural products really does pay off! If you’d like to try this for yourself, now is your chance as Tropic Skin Care are currently offering FREE UK P&P on all orders placed before midnight on the 31st of January. Just enter the code ‘TROPICTREATS‘ at the checkout.
You can view the full Tropic Pure Plant Skin Care range here – they have such a wide range of products, from Cloth Cleansers to Body Butters to Body Oil, and its all affordable! Which Tropic product would you most like to try?

BeTrousse Christmas Beauty Box
2Earlier this week I received an unexpected parcel in the post, which turned out to be the latest offering from BeTrousse – their Christmas Beauty Box. A bit late I know, but better late than never! This time, the box contains seven full-size products and retails for £19, saving you a whopping £78 based on the RRP of each product. Here is what’s in the box…
- Tattyoo Temporary Tattoo Set
- Charme D’Orient Relaxing Body Massage Cream
- Skinetica Anti-Blemish
- Montagne Jeunesse Dead Sea Mud Spa Mask
- TurboSlim ChronoActiv Tablets
- Soins Experts HydraExpert Cream
- Saffron London Crackling Nail Polish
My first thoughts when I opened the box were mixed. To start with, the contents weren’t very Christmassy! Given the name of the box I was expecting a bit of glitter and maybe some festive red lipstick, but there wasn’t any in sight, and instead I was met with the usual abundance of skin care products. Luckily, I love to pamper my skin, so I can never have too many lotions and potions!
As usual, BeTrousse have generously provided full-size products so you can really feel the effects of each product before deciding whether or not to repurchase. So, for now, I will let you know my first impression of each item, and review them in more detail at a later date when I’ve given them a good go.
Tattyoo Temporary Tattoo Set – 2 sheets – RRP £5.00
In all honesty I thought this was a strange addition to a beauty box. I haven’t used tattoo transfers since I was a child, and I can’t think of a situation which would call for these. Not for me I’m afraid, but having looked at Tattyoo’s website they do have some amazing, affordable designs which might be fun to wear as an accessory when you fancy something a bit different and creative, without the committment of having a real tattoo!
Charme D’Orient Relaxing Body Massage Cream – 100ml – RRP £16.00
This Belle Nigelle relaxing body cream is easily my favourite product in the box. If you’ve read my Omni Massage Roller review you’ll know I love a good massage, so this is right up my street. The cream itself smells absolutely beautiful as it contains cinnamon essential oils, and it has a light, smooth consistency which massages delicately into the skin without making a mess. Ideal for relaxing muscles, I’m sure I’ll be getting a lot of use out of this – a definite winner! Not all boxes contain this though – the alternative product is a Bath & Massage Oil by the same brand.
Skinetica Anti-Blemish – 100ml – RRP £9.99
I’m always on the look-out for new spot clearing products, so Skinetica’s Anti-Blemish was a welcome addition to the box. I’ve only tried this on the back of my hand so far so I can’t comment on whether it works, but it claims to show results within 2 to 3 days which is pretty impressive. The liquid is clear and non-greasy, and contains no nasty chemicals, so it’s bound to be gentle on the skin – a bonus for sensitive souls like myself!
Montagne Jeunesse Dead Sea Mud Spa Mask – 1 mask – RRP £1.49
I have tried Montagne Jeunesse’s Dead Sea Mud Spa mask before and I loved it. They’re such a lovely product for a girly pamper session, so I was glad to have another to add to my dwindling stash. If you want to know more about what I think of the mask, you can read my review here. At £1.49 they are a steal!
TurboSlim ChronoActiv Tablets – 28 tablets – RRP £29.95
TurboSlim ChronoActiv appeared in BeTrousse’s first box, and has popped up again in the Christmas box. I have no intention of losing any more weight, so I won’t be using these, and quite frankly I don’t believe that weightloss pills actually work! The box contains 28 pills and you’re supposed to take 2 a day, meaning one box will last for 14 days. The box states that you will start to see results after 15 days, so one box wouldn’t make a difference anyway, and to buy another box costs £29.95. A rather expensive investment for something that might not work!
Soins Experts HydraExpert Cream – 50ml – RRP £34.00
HydraExpert is formulated to have protective, soothing, anti-oxidant and hydrating properties – four things which my dry, sensitive skin needs! I’ve only tried this on my hand so far and the cream has a nice consistency and very little smell. Given its properties, I think it will make a nice addition to my skin care routine.
Saffron London Crackling Nail Polish – 14ml – RRP £0.75
Last, and unfortunately least, is this – a bottle of Saffron London black crackle varnish. The very same varnish was included in BeTrousse’s last box, the Pretty Beauty Box, and I feel the same about it now as I did then! The crackle trend is on its way out now, and considering I already have one of these I don’t have much use for this, so I will be giving it away.
Overall, another mixed bag of products. Some I love, some I don’t, and the Christmas theme really isn’t there at all. However, if you’re interested in trying one of the more expensive products in the box then this is definitely worth the £19 price tag, as you’ll be saving money AND getting several other products to try.
Which product in the Christmas Beauty Box do you most like the look of?
