Thrifty Finds No. 7: Charity Shops

0

For most of this week I’ve had a well earned break from work, and on Wednesday afternoon my mum and I went thrift shopping for the first time in months.  We decided to head to two local towns to browse the charity shops, and it was well worth the trip, as I managed to find some fantastic bargains!

Total Spend: £15.49

I’m really pleased with this haul as I managed to get pieces for work and leisure, from some great brands.  My two favourites are the Zara shirt, which looks great with black skinnies and heels, and the Lipsy lace bolero.  The bolero still had its tags attached so is brand new, and was actually £15.00 in the Lipsy sale, so at £3.00 was an absolute steal!

Alexander McQueen Autumn Winter Wishlist

McQueen AW WishlistFolded Drape Mini Skirt / Ladder High Neck Dress / Rouched Knit Crew Neck Jumper / Long Handkerchief Skirt / Silk Chiffon Creased Roses Scarf / Studded Heeled Bootie / Legend Bag / Draped Sleeve Flare Dress / Petal Sleeve Double Breasted Coat / Studded Continental Wallet / Folded Drape Mini Dress / Studded Heroine Bag

I’ve always been more of an Autumn/Winter fan than a Spring/Summer one (which is probably just as well considering I live in chilly little England!), so although I’m enjoying the longer days, blue skies and lush landscapes of the current months, I can’t help but get a little bit excited about the up and coming Autumn/Winter collections from my favourite shops and designers.  Walking around the Highcross last week, I’ve already started to notice a slow trickle of thicker fabrics and darker colours coming in and, much to my delight, Alexander McQueen have also just launched their Pre Autumn Winter 2015, and Autumn Winter 2015 collections.  There are some absolutely stunning pieces in both collections, but unfortunately I’m far too poor to afford any of it!  So I thought I’d share with you my McQueen Autumn/Winter wishlist, so that you can see how beautiful it all is, but also so I can come back to it during the end of year sale to remind myself of what I want, in the hope that I will then be able to afford it!

Which is your favourite piece?

What I Wore: Burgundy

Connection Burgundy Dress / George Black Shrug / Primark Tights / Blonde + Blonde Lace Up Block Heel Boots / Juno Black Patent Grab Bag / Le Chat Marcasite Watch

On Sunday I went out for a lovely meal with my in-laws, to celebrate Charles’ Grandma’s 90th birthday.  We went to The Grey Lady in Newtown Linford, and had a private room for twelve to enjoy our delicious three course lunch.

I decided to wear something colourful for a change, so I went for this gorgeous burgundy dress that I bought from Everything5Pounds a little while ago.  Considering it was so cheap the quality is fantastic, and I adore the subtly patterned floral fabric.

Of course, I had to get some black in there somewhere, so I teamed it with black tights and a black shrug from George (it was a bit chilly out!), my Blonde + Blonde boots, which are becoming a wardrobe staple of mine, and one of my favourite bags.

You might have also spotted our neighbour’s little kitty, who likes to photobomb when I take outfit photos!  She’s the cutest.

What I Wore: Mandala

Per Una Crochet Long Top (Thrifted) / Primark Basic Vest / Primark Black Skinny Trousers / Blonde + Blonde Lace Up Block Heel Boots / Four Beautiful Keys Moon Necklace

The last few days have been warm enough to go out without a coat or jacket, so today when Charles and I headed out for lunch, I decided to wear something with a bit of detail that wouldn’t be covered.  I’m still not quite over my winter passion for layering, so this long crochet top by Per Una seemed like the perfect transition item.  I picked this up for £1 from a carboot sale a few weeks ago, as you probably saw in my latest thrifty finds post, and it’s so comfortable and light.  I adore the long bell sleeves with their mandala-type crochet patterning, and the length of the top is really flattering.

I needed some new black skinnies for Spring, but wanted something lighter than denim, and these Primark trousers are ideal.  I found them in the jeans section, but they’re actually made of a soft stretchy fabric.  They fit really well too, which is a big thing for me as I have long legs so usually struggle to find trousers that are long enough for me, but these are fine!

The lace up boots are also new, and were an amazing find.  I was strolling through the local shopping centre a few weeks ago, with no intention of buying anything, but happened to spot them in the window of BANK.  The shop was having a closing down sale, and these babies were discounted from £38 to just £7.60!  Lucky for me, despite the shop being almost empty, there was one pair left in my size, so it was meant to be, especially as I’ve been after some laced block heel boots for MONTHS.  Winner!

Highcross Spring Beauty Fix

5

A few weeks ago the Highcross in Leicester ran a two-day Spring Beauty Fix event, so I headed down on the Saturday to see what was going on.

I decided to get there early so I could appreciate the event before the centre got really busy, and already there was a buzz around what the Beauty Fix had to offer. There were several displays featuring this season’s fashion trends, with a colour consultant on hand to advise on the best colours to suit your style throughout Spring. I had a quick browse of the rails and spotted a cute dress covered in polka dots, which happens to be my favourite print for clothing, so I’m hoping to see more dotty items in the shops soon!

Another stand which caught my eye was the Beauty Amnesty, which invited shoppers to discard five unwanted items of make-up, in exchange for a £10 gift card to be spent on beauty items that day. A great deal considering several brands were offering discounts, and brands such as Nails Inc, Urban Decay and Hotel Chocolat were all giving beauty advice during the event!

There were also many offers to be had on the day in stores, and several freebies up for grabs. Rituals and Decleor were offering complimentary skincare consultations, and Rituals, YSL and Clinique also had free samples and items to give away.

Whilst at the event I also managed to do a bit of shopping, and whilst browsing Debenhams’ beauty offerings I spotted Ghost’s Eclipse fragrance, which I decided to treat myself to. Ghost perfumes are my all-time favourites, and Eclipse’s light floral and fruity notes will be perfect for the coming warm months. I also headed over to H&M as I wanted a new dress, and managed to get a lovely grey number, as well as some cute mouse slippers.

Overall it was a fun day, and I’m looking forward to the next event that Highcross puts on, as they’re always enjoyable.

Thrifty Finds No. 6: Car Boot

5

It’s that time of year when the car boot sales start up again (yay!), so on Easter Sunday I went along to my first car boot of the year.  As usual I was on the look out for fashion bargains, and lucky for me the clothes were out in abundance.  I spent a good while rifling through boxes and clothes rails, and managed to come away with four good quality pieces.

I also got a cute little ‘Sew Your Own Baby Owl’ kit for 50p, which I thought would be a nice little craft project to do one evening.

It total, including the craft kit, I spent just £7.  I’m really pleased with my latest thrift haul, and I hope I can keep up the pace and add more bargainous additions to my wardrobe next time!

Have you been thrifting yet this year?  Have you managed to find anything exciting?

Primark Skater Dress / Primark Light Knit Cape / Primark Metal Waist Belt / Unbranded Stag Necklace / Schuh Biker Boots

After my foray into brightly coloured floral last week, today’s outfit post is back to my usual ‘black on black’.

I can’t get enough of my new Primark cape at the minute.  It’s lovely and light so is perfect for every day wear during spring, and looks great with pretty much anything.

The dress is one of my wardrobe staples, and has already seen me through a couple of years of wear.  I’m not usually a fan of high necks as I find them irritating, but this one is surprisingly comfortable and flattering.  Team it with a statement necklace, like this antique gold stag head, and a waist belt, and you’re good to go.

I found the boots lurking at the back of my wardrobe last week.  I haven’t worn them for years, and they were a bit battered when I pulled them from the depths of my closet, but I think they look all the better for it.  They were originally from Schuh, but I replaced the laces with black ribbon when I first bought them.

Debenhams Random Acts of Kindess

Ben de Lisi Spike Drop Necklace

February 9th saw the start of Random Acts of Kindness week, and to celebrate Debenhams surprised me with their very own RAK, and let me choose a little treat from their range of jewellery.  There were quite a few pieces to pick from, and after much deliberation I settled for this striking spike drop necklace, by Ben de Lisi for Principles.

The chunky cord chain, large glass gems and silver plated accents make this necklace look effortlessly glam, and it really does make a statement.  It looks amazing teamed with a little black dress, either dressed up with a pair of heels and a clutch, or down with a pair of ankle boots and cute cardigan.

The necklace usually costs £18, but is currently on offer with 20% off.  Shop it here!

What I Wore: Floral

Primark Light Knit Cape / Primark Floral Skater Skirt / Primark Basic T Shirt / Primark Tights / Gifted Cloudbusting Silver Necklace

It would seem that Spring is finally here, and brighter weather calls for brighter clothing!  I’ve been trying to add a few more colourful pieces to my mostly black wardrobe lately, and this skater skirt from Primark is a good start.  It’s floral and made of crepe, two things I’m not usually a fan of, but at £3 in the sale I thought I’d give it a go, and was pleasantly surprised.  It’s a lovely shape and very comfortable, and though I bought it to with the intention of wearing it to work, I can see it becoming an all round favourite this season.

The black cape was also in the Primark sale, half price at just £7.  It’s a lovely soft lightweight knit, so is perfect for keeping covered during the spring months, when it isn’t quite warm enough for bare arms.

As you may have seen in my 25th Birthday Haul post, this gorgeous necklace was gifted to me by my fiancé for my birthday.  It’s made of 925 silver and was personalised especially for me.  Cloudbusting by Kate Bush is one of my favourite songs, and holds many special memories, so I absolutely adore it.

Have you been enjoying the warmer weather this weekend?

25th Birthday Haul

1

On Valentine’s Day I turned 25, and though I felt unwell (for the third birthday in a row!), I had a great day.  Charles treated me to a lovely breakfast in bed of Belgian chocolate waffles, hot tea, and fresh orange juice.  We then went for a long walk around Bradgate Park with my family, and had lunch at a tea room, and in the evening we had a pizza party with amazing chocolate birthday cake!

I was lucky enough to receive lots of cards, a few Highcross and Amazon vouchers from friends and family, and some gorgeous gifts, so I thought I’d do a little haul post to show you some of what I got.

My mum gifted me this watch, and it’s absolutely stunning.  I love the marcasite detail and I’ve been wearing it every day since I got it.

DSC_1091 (800x532)

My two main presents from Charles were these Kate Bush themed necklaces.  The first one is from her official website, and features lyrics from one of my favourite songs, Cloudbusting.  I actually saw this when I went to see Kate in London last year, but couldn’t afford it at the time.  I really wasn’t expecting to get it for my birthday, so was so happy when I opened it!  The second necklace is made of silver and was personalised just for me.  I love it.

DSC_1099 (800x532)

Charles also got me this awesome Game of Thrones t shirt.  I can’t wait to style it for an outfit post in the coming weeks!

My dad gave me a few bits for the house, my favourite of which is the Moroccan lamp.  It’s made of metal and is lined with purple fabric, and gives off a lovely ambient glow.  It now takes pride of place on my living room fireplace.

DSC_1103 (800x532)

Much to my delight I get quite a few books every year, and this year was no different.  Charles gave me ‘A First Book of Nature’, and ‘An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth’ by my space hero, Chris Hadfield.  The rat training book was from an old school friend, and my sister gave me ‘Wreck This Journal’ and ‘The Pocket Scavenger’, both by Keri Smith.  I can’t wait to start filling them in!

DSC_1107 (800x531)

DSC_1106 (800x532) (2)

DSC_1104 (800x532)

All of the above were parts of gifts from my old school friends, who I celebrated with last night at my favourite restaurant.  There was a definite rat theme to their gifts this year!

DSC_1093 (800x532)

And of course, no birthday haul would be complete without an abundance of chocolate!

DSC_1109 (800x532)

Last but not least, my talented mum made me this super cute heart wreath.  She crocheted the flowers herself, and decorated them with buttons.  This now adorns my bedroom door and it looks right at home.
