What I Wore: Stormy

2

One of my favourite things about summer is the storms.  The rain that cools the air down, the thunder, the lightning – it’s all so exciting!  This weekend has been particularly unpredictable, with amazing storms one minute, and bright, hot sun the next, which though nice, makes it difficult to know what to wear.

New Look Multi Strap Skater Dress / Everything5Pounds Waterfall Jacket / Alexander McQueen Cateye Sunglasses / Primark Tights / New Look Stud Pumps / Topshop Leather Stud Bag (Thrifted) / Accessories Boutique Heavy Spike Bracelet

The key for me has been light layers that can be added/removed accordingly.  A dress makes a great base for this kind of look, as it’s cool enough for the sun, but can be made rain and wind proof with a jacket and tights.  I went for this New Look Multi Strap Skater Dress that I bought in the last ASOS sale, and added a pair of basic sheer black tights from Primark to avoid flashing my undies in the wind, and a lovely waterfall jacket from Everything5Pounds.  I absolutely love this jacket as it’s really comfortable, and is perfect for warm weather as a cover as the fabric is so lightweight.

To accessorise, I wore my Alexander McQueen Cateye Sunglasses, that are an absolute essential when the sun is shining, and I also gave my New Look stud pumps a first outing.  Of course my trusty thrifted Topshop leather bag was a necessity too, and I added a heavy spike bracelet from Accessories Boutique to bring the stud theme of the outfit together.

Designer Accessories, High Street Clothes

4

Though some people see it as an absolute cardinal sin to team high street with designer, I’m the opposite, and I think that mixing the two can be the perfect way to create high-end looks, without completely bankrupting yourself.  In my experience, buying timeless designer accessories that will transition from season to season, every year, can actually save you money, whilst adding a touch of luxury to a variety of high street outfits.

‘But why not buy designer clothing and high street accessories?’, I hear you ask.  Well, you could, but fashions and personal tastes change, and that dress you love this year might not be your thing next year, and it might not even fit you then!  But you never grow out of basic sunglasses, jewellery, bags and shoes.

DSC_0994 (640x426)

The key to choosing the right pieces is to save up, do your research on what is best for you, and spend savvily.  Not all of us, myself included, can afford to buy designer with every pay cheque, hence having to mix with high street, but if you put a little bit aside when you can and keep an eye out for a good deal, you can bag yourself a timeless piece that will last for years.  This summer I’ve been relying on two designer pieces in particular, both by Alexander McQueen.  I bought these zipped biker heels in the McQ online winter sale after eyeing them up for months, and they were reduced from over £500 to £159.  They’re made from very high quality leather, are surprisingly comfortable, and look great with anything from smart work outfits and going out dresses, to casual jeans and a jumper or tee.

DSC_1002 (640x426)

My other go-to designer accessory this summer is a pair of stunning vintage-style cateye sunglasses.  I know a lot of people wouldn’t choose to splurge on a pair of sunnies, but think of it this way…  If you spend £15 on a pair of sunglasses, chances are that by the end of the summer they’ll be broken.  It happens to me almost every year because, quite frankly, cheap often means badly made.  But if you save up and shell out on a more expensive pair, made from higher quality materials, they’ll more than likely last a lot, lot longer, and eventually you’ll have saved money by not buying a new pair every year!

DSC_0999 (640x426)

DSC_0939 (640x426)

I adore these sunglasses, and have been wearing them almost every day for the past couple of months.  They’re very sturdy and come in a solid protective case so can’t be broken or damaged easily, and the lenses provide far better protection for your eyes than cheaper shades.  The classic cateye shape has been popular for decades, but the glossy eye frames against the matte brow, and gradient lenses, give them a modern, Gothic edge that really suits my personal style.  Alexander McQueen sunglasses don’t come cheap, and I’ve seen these on a lot of websites for around £220, but you can get them from Red Hot Sunglasses for £180, with free delivery.

Be sure to check back soon for a series of What I Wore posts featuring these designer accessories and high street clothing!

Thrifty Finds No.5: Car Boot

2

Last Sunday I visited my favourite car boot sale once again, and came away with yet another decent fashion haul.  I managed to find a few things that I’ve actually been looking for for a while, which I was very pleased about, as well as a few other unexpected items.  Here’s what I bought…

DSC_0596 (640x425)

Topshop Studded Lace Bralet £5

This cost a bit more than I usually like to spend on items at a car boot sale, but I just couldn’t resist the studs and lace!  Topshop bralets seem to be really popular at the moment, and this one has an RRP of £38, so I’m pleased to have found one in my size at a fraction of the price.  According to the lady I bought it from it is unworn too, other than being tried on.

DSC_0638 (424x640) DSC_0658 (640x426)

New Look Cutout Heart Dress £2

I’ve been wanting a cut out heart dress for ages, so when I spotted this under a huge pile of clothes on one stall, I snapped it up.  It’s exactly my size too!  I love it, and it looks like it’s never been worn which is a bonus.

DSC_0624 (423x640) (2) DSC_0629 (424x640)

Sans Souci Polka Dot Dip Hem Blouse £2

This is one of my favourite finds of the day.  I’m currently on the look out for more summer tops, and this will be perfect for warm, sunny days.  The dip hem and button back detail are really lovely, and are what caught my eye when I saw it on the rail.  Sans Souci isn’t a brand I’m familiar with, but the blouse still had a TK Maxx tag attached, and it cost £9.99 new.

Oasis Leather Studded Waist Belt £1.50

Again, I’ve been trying to source a decent waist belt for a while, so this was another bargain I couldn’t pass up.  The belt is made from real leather, and still had its Oasis tags attached so is brand new.

DSC_0605 (640x426)

H&M Silver and Grey Jumper £1

It’s not like I need another jumper, but I actually saw a similar jumper to this in H&M last season and wanted one, so I bought it anyway.  I thought it’d be itchy, but it’s actually nice and soft, and I know I’ll get plenty of wear out of it.

DSC_0610 (425x640)

Next Oversized Polka Dot Shirt 25p

This shirt is three sizes too big for me, but I bought it to wear it as an oversized cardigan during cool summer evenings.  And anyway, at 25p I couldn’t say no.

Stuart Little Soft Toy 50p

And just because I have a soft spot for cuddly toys and rodents, I brought Stuart Little home for 50p.  He has slightly tatty whiskers and was a little grubby, but after a quick bath he’s now squeaky clean (excuse the pun!)

Total: £12.25

What do you think of my latest thrifty finds?  Which piece stands out for you?

Thrifty Finds No.4: Car Boot

3

On Sunday I decided to indulge, yet again, in one of my favourite hobbies – thrifting – and got up bright and early to go to two car boot sales in Leicestershire.  In particular I was hoping to find some bargainous clothes to add to my spring/summer wardrobe, and though I came away from the first car boot with nothing (how disappointing!), the second was a veritable treasure trove of fashion!  For the grand total of just £4.50 I managed to get a waterfall cardigan, a thin knit jumper, a t-shirt, and my absolute favourite find of the day, a pair of wedge shoes.

What I Wore: Acid Wash

1

I didn’t do much shopping during the recent spring sales, but I did place a little order with USC at the start of April.  Unfortunately they use Yodel as a courier, who are notoriously unreliable, and it took over two weeks for my parcel to arrive – not great considering I paid £3.99 postage!  At one point I was told my parcel was lost, but then it miraculously turned up the next day!  Though I’m not happy with the service I received, the items I got were sort of worth the wait.  One of said items is this gorgeous acid wash denim skater skirt, which was reduced from £22 to just £3.50.  Acid wash was all the rage in the 1990s, the decade of my childhood, and though fashion wasn’t the greatest in those days, I do quite like acid wash denim, and this skirt makes me feel all nostalgic.

I really wanted the skirt to do the talking with this outfit, so I paired it with a plain black tee and sheer black tights.  I was considering wearing heels too, but in the end I settled for Converse as I think they suit skater style clothing well, and my partner and I were heading to the cinema so I thought I’d keep it casual.

Finally, to pull the outfit together, I accessorised with a grey spike necklace from Claire’s, and my metallic silver Gothic Lace Saddle Bag by Zatchels, just to bring out the silver in my shoes and to match the grey in the skirt.

I also got a beautiful dress in my USC order which I absolutely love, so check back soon to see how I style it!

What I Wore: Foxton Locks

2

Today my fiancé and I visited Foxton Locks with my sister and her boyfriend.  Foxton Locks are ten canal locks on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal, and the whole area is so lovely and green.  I’ve always enjoyed visiting the Locks, ever since I was a child, but today’s trip was extra special as it was the first time my fiancé had been.  We all had a nice time and had a little picnic whilst we watched the boats go by, before going for a walk along the canal paths.

As April’s weather is usually unpredictable, I thought layers would be best, so I wore my favourite Primark skater dress (which is becoming a Spring wardrobe staple of mine), and teamed it with my trusty faux leather biker jacket and some basic leggings.  Over this I wore an oversized but light floral skull scarf which I thrifted last year, for an extra bit of warmth if necessary.  As it happens, the weather was gorgeous and the sun was shining, but luckily it didn’t get too hot.

As I knew we’d be walking a lot, I thought it best to throw on my Dr Martens, which was definitely the right call, and I also took another thrifty find of mine – my Topshop leather stud bag.  The perfect size to carry my camera and picnic food.

I’m so pleased that Spring is finally underway as I love being out and about enjoying the nice weather, and today was a great opportunity to do so!  Have you been taking advantage of the sunshine lately?

What I Wore: Birthday Dress

4

Yesterday was my birthday, and my fiancé and I went out for a lovely birthday/Valentine’s lunch at one of my favourite bars. It might have been freezing cold and chucking it down with rain, but I was determined to wear the beautiful black jersey maxi dress that my mum gave me as a gift, so I layered it up with tights, my Primark faux leather biker jacket, and my Fraas stars & skull wrap.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

M&Co Black Jersey Maxi Dress / Primark Faux Leather Biker Jacket / Dr Martens Grace Denise 8 Big Eye Boots / Fraas Tonal Stars & Skull Wrap / Juno Black Patent Grab Bag / Primark Tights and Gloves

This wrap is my go-to piece to add a splash of colour to any outfit, and the great thing is it’s reversible, so you can alter the shade to suit your mood. The combination of pink, orange and purple is really pretty, and the stars and skull pattern is right up my street. It’s made of high quality wool too so it’s beautifully soft and warm; perfect for this time of year.

Wet weather also calls for trusty boots and a waterproof bag, so I wore my Grace Denise floral Dr Martens to colour match the scarf, and this stunning Juno patent grab bag from Where Shall I Wander. I used to only ever use shoulder bags, but lately I’ve really started to appreciate classic, structured handbags like this one (although it does come with a detachable shoulder strap). I absolutely adore the contrast of gold on shiny black, and for patent it’s pretty classy looking.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Another thing I love about the bag is how it fastens. It zips along the top but also partly down the sides, so no water can get in whatsoever, but when it’s unzipped it expands so it’s really roomy, with one main compartment and three little pockets. I use it to carry my camera around with me as I don’t have to worry about it getting wet.

If you want to see what I got for my birthday, check back soon for a little haul post!

What I Wore: Cirque Berserk

3

Last night my family and I went to see Cirque Berserk at the Curve theatre in Leicester.  I have absolutely adored circuses ever since my childhood, and have been to many, but this was my first time going to a circus that wasn’t in a big top tent.  I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but the show and set really suited the stage.  There was a slight Steampunk theme which was cool, and though the show wasn’t flawless, it still had that magical and exciting charm that I like.  I even enjoyed the clown’s antics, which is unusual for me as they usually freak me out a little bit!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My outfit of choice for the evening was quite the opposite to the colourful spectacle of the circus, as it consisted of, you guessed it, black, black, and more black!  I wore quite a few of my January sale pieces (mostly from Primark), including my leather cap sleeve black dress, and my new leather-look biker jacket, which is one of my favourite recent buys.  The jacket is lined with thick fluffy fleece so is incredibly warm, so much so that I was toasty even with it open!

I also added a snood and tights for a bit of extra warmth, my Zatchels Gothic Lace saddle bag, and my trusty Kurt Geiger Sally Ankle Boots.  The bag was a huge bargain as well, as it only cost £38.99 for the large size in the Zatchels sale, which I think was about half price!

Apologies for the low quality photos by the way – they were taken outside at night, with the flash on.

Oh, and here’s my face of the night too!  The lipstick is by Sleek in the gorgeous purple shade of ‘Smother’.  I love this lipstick as it lasts for ages, and when it finally does wear off it does so evenly, so it still looks fab.

Collection Gothic Glam Lipstick in ‘Revenge’

3

After seeing a few reviews of Collection’s new Gothic Glam lipsticks popping up on other blogs, last weekend I decided to nip into Superdrug and pick one up so I could give it a try myself.  I’ve always loved a dark lipstick, ever since my teenage Goth days, and the Gothic Glam range features three beautiful deep shades that are just my thing, so I had high hopes from the start.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The three shades are 1 Seduction, a lovely pinky red, 2 Scorned, a dark purple, and 3 Revenge, a deep berry red, which is the shade I went for, and they’re all perfect for Autumn/Winter.  All three lipsticks have Collection’s signature black packaging, but rather than pink it is embellished with gold, which I think gives it a more luxe look.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The lipstick itself has a very creamy texture, so it glides on easily and evenly.  It’s also quite moisturising, however, I would still recommend using a lip balm underneath, or exfoliating your lips before use, as after a while it tends to show up darker on any dry patches/creases.  Not ideal in winter I must say!

DSC_0463 (640x427)

‘Revenge’ is a stunning, vampy, almost maroon red, and is very highly pigmented, or as Collection says, ‘deeply intense’.  The colour lasts well on the lips and it stays bold for several hours after application, but it does eventually start to wear off, and needs touching up every now and then.  But I tend to expect that of dark shades anyway.  I have noticed that it acts almost like a lip tint though, as even after I’ve removed it my lips look slightly stained with a hint of berry red.

Collection’s Gothic Glam lipsticks retail for £2.99 each, which is just so affordable, and for a budget product ‘Revenge’ is really quite impressive.  The colour and staying power could even rival some of my more expensive lipsticks!  It reminds me a little bit of Dainty Doll’s 001 Couture, which is another of my favourites.  So, if you love dark shades and are willing to moisturise/exfoliate before applying lipstick, then Collection Gothic Glam Lipsticks could be for you.  You can find them in Superdrug and Boots!

What are your thoughts on this range?

French Connection Wishlist

0

For years my personal style has featured a lot of black, so I’ve really been embracing this season’s trends for black and the leather look, as they’re letting me revive my teenage love of the Gothic, but with a bit more sophistication.  In my search for new clothes to add to my hoard of black, I have been browsing the internet, and have found that French Connection’s current range has some amazing pieces that would look right at home in my wardrobe.  So, I thought I’d put together a little wishlist featuring a selection of my favourite French Connection clothing.

French Connection

T-Solar Dress / Vienna Dress / Judy Jegs Jeggings / Judy Jegs Pencil Skirt / Riot PU Jacket

These two French Connection dresses are fine examples of what, for me, a little black dress should be.  They’re classic in their shape and fit, but have a little something extra that really makes a statement.  The T-Solar’s leather panels and pleated skirt are bang on trend and give it a real edge, and the Vienna dress’s beautiful sheer lace sleeves and waist detail look so elegant.  Both dresses would be perfect for the upcoming party season, teamed with a contrasting necklace and heels.

The Judy Jegs Jeggings and Pencil Skirt are simple pieces that could easily become wardrobe staples for me.  Their simplicity means they could be worn to work without looking too over the top, making them the ideal way to bring the leather look into the office.  Having said that, they could also both be dressed up with a nice top, your favourite jewellery and a gorgeous bag for a glamorous evening look.

Last but not least, the Riot PU Jacket would be great for those days when you want to wear something a bit brighter, whilst maintaining that on trend edge.  It could be thrown over a colourful bodycon dress or even a t-shirt and jeans, and still look brilliant.  The cropped fit, exposed zips and emphasised shoulders are also really modern, which I love.

You can find these pieces from French Connection online at divinetrash.co.uk.
