Though I’m usually quite happy to go out of my comfort zone and try new beauty products, there are still a few things that I can’t bring myself to try! I’ve pondered each of them several times and come close to giving them a go, but every time I back out. Here they are, and here’s why…
I have naturally pale skin so the bronzed look doesn’t really become my “English Rose” (as my mum would say) complexion. Due to my lack of experience with bronzer, I also wouldn’t know how or where on my face to apply it, so I’d probably end up looking like a shiny penny, which is a definite no.
The thought of having my hair ripped out from the root horrifies me. I know they say no pain, no gain, but the whole epilating process just seems a bit drastic! I’m not that desperate for long-lasting hairlessness anyway. I’ll stick to razors, thanks.
3. Facial Oil
I have combination skin on my face which is quite patchy, so though I have dry areas which would benefit from facial oil, I’m worried that the already oily parts would end up looking hideously greasy and shiny.
4. Permanent Hair Dye
I’ve always been happy with the colour of my brunette locks, but every now and then I fancy a change. I’ve experimented with wash in/wash out colourants in the past, but permanent dyes are just too permanent for my liking, especially if I change my mind or don’t like the colour! I also don’t want bleach anywhere near my head.
5. Cuticle Pusher
The sensation of pushing my cuticles back actually turns my stomach, so to me a cuticle pusher actually looks like an instrument of torture. Luckily, my cuticles don’t grow that much, so I don’t really need to use one anyway.
So, what do you think – am I right to steer clear of these beauty products? Or should I take the plunge and try them out? I’d be happy to hear any suitable recommendations you may have! Also, please vote below and let me know which of these you think I should try, and if I’m brave enough I might just do it!
What products are you too afraid to try?
I have something very exciting to share with you today… Bewitchery has been featured on Superdrug’s Look at Me beauty blog!
The article, called ‘Beauty Bloggers We Love: Bewitchery‘, features a little Q&A with myself, including beauty tips and Superdrug product recommendations, as well as a few pictures. Of course, my beloved MUA get a big mention! You can read the feature here.
What do you think of Bewitchery’s feature?
In February 2012, when Bewitchery was born, I decided to broaden my beauty horizons and try as many new products as possible throughout the year, without breaking the bank. In my mission to discover new favourites I came across many products which were less than impressive, but luckily I also found a great deal of fantastic ones, a fair few of which I have used time and time again, and will continue to do so. In this post I will give you a round-up of just a few of the best products I tried for the first time in 2012, linking to my review of each with a little extract of my post, just to give you an idea of why I love it!
“In terms of lasting power, this liner definitely has it. I have been wearing it now since this morning and it still looks as bright as it did when it first went on, and the line is just as clean. I’ve been rubbing my eyes a bit today too and it hasn’t smudged a bit – amazing!”
“The absolute best thing about this nail polish is the colour. My favourite colours are purple, turquoise and pink, and ‘Disco Mix’ combines turquoise and pink glitter to create a polish which looks purple at a distance. The glitter colours are SO bright and bold.”
“One of the things that drew me to this foundation was the fact that it is matte and claims to offer a long-lasting velvet finish. I suffer from an oily T-zone (especially during the summer months) and I don’t like the shine that the oil creates, so I am always looking for ways to minimise the shine. MUA’s Matte Foundation, as you would hope, does give a matte complexion, and it keeps most of the shine at bay.”
“The body butter itself is fantastically light and creamy and feels so luxurious on the skin. It is absorbed very quickly too, leaving no messy residue. The product contains coconut oil, shea butter and avocado oil to aid with moisturisation, but despite the oil content it isn’t at all greasy. The oils make the butter ‘Intensively hydrating’, and combine to give ’12 hour moisturisation’, and believe me, the softness really does last that long.”
“Though the tan didn’t give my legs an intense colour, it did make them look nicely, naturally tanned and lightly brown, and I am very pleased with the results. There are no orange blotches or dirty looking streaks in sight, and my skin tone looks very even and smooth. The difference is only minor, but it is noticeable, and that is what I wanted so it has done its job well in my opinion.”
“Not one of Montagne Jeunesse’s lip balms contain petroleum jelly, so they aren’t greasy at all. Rather, they are made from 100% natural beeswax and olive oil and are lightly creamy but intensely moisturising. The beeswax forms a protective layer on the lips making them long-lasting, and the olive oil gives them a subtle shine.”
“Northern Lights consists of a very fine dusky pink glitter, and is studded with delicate flakes of holographic glitter which shine purple, blue, orange, yellow and green in most lights. Even in the bottle, the varnish is breathtaking, and I have never seen anything quite like it before.”
“The primer leaves a smooth, non-greasy base on the skin, and since I’ve been using this I have found that my foundation smooths onto my skin far more easily and evenly than usual, without going patchy on any dry bits. The primer keeps my powder and blusher in place too, so on the whole my make up lasts a lot longer, which I think is down to the lack of greasiness.”
“The gel is very creamy and lathers into masses of moisturising bubbles quicker than any other shower gel I have ever used! Because of its impressive lathering abilities, a little goes a long way with these bubbles, so a £2 coin size is enough for your whole body.”
“The first time I used the roller I asked my mum to help me reach the tense areas on my back, and even though she used it over my clothing I was amazed that the roller was sensitive enough to pick out all the knots in my muscles. We could both feel them ‘crunching’, which sounds horrible but it meant she knew which areas to focus on. The shape and movement of the ball means that any focused pressure is distributed outwards slightly, so the knots can be worked out without any pain or discomfort.”
…and one that I LOVE and am going to review again because I didn’t write much last time…
“Unlike most nail varnish removers, this Sally Hansen offering smells lovely, almost like a body lotion, and doesn’t sting your eyes or nose with harsh vapours. It removes nail varnish quickly, with minimum effort, so you don’t need to sit for ages rubbing away to no avail!”
What were your favourite products of 2012?
For the past few weeks I have been planning something a little bit different for my blog that I hope you will all enjoy. Starting tomorrow and ending on Friday I will be running a chocolate themed week, called Chocolate Treat Week, and will be sharing my favourite chocolate scented, flavoured, coloured and themed beauty and fashion products. Each post will cover a different area of fashion and beauty, including skin care, bath and body, hair, make up, nails and clothing and accessories. I don’t know about you, but I think chocolate is the best kind of treat, so the aim of my posts will be to show you that there are plenty of ways to carry a love of chocolate through to your beauty regime and relax and pamper yourself with a chocolate treat that isn’t the edible kind.
There seems to be a divide when it comes to chocolate beauty products, so everything I recommend has been thoroughly tried and tested and only the best will be featured! I will talk about a variety of products, some for the hardcore chocoholics among us, and others for those that like to keep it subtle, but I can almost guarantee that there will be something suitable for everyone – even the haters!
I’ll also be including a tutorial or two along the way, and a few chocolatey words from some of my favourite bloggers at the end of each post.
See you tomorrow,
After years of sticking with simple black and pink packaging, Avon have just had a complete overhaul of their Colortrend range. The old lipsticks, glosses, eyeshadows and nail enamels have been scrapped and replaced with a bigger and brighter selection of shades, and everything else has also been spruced up with a fresh look. I received a few items from the new range with my last Avon order, and this is what they look like…
Pictured above, in no particular order, you can see:
- Color Me Pretty Suede Effect Nail Enamel in ‘Soft Violet’
- Color Me Pretty Nail Enamel in ‘Velour’
- Pencil Play Eyeliner in ‘Turquoise’
- Plump Out Mascara in ‘Black’
- Read My Lips Lip Gloss in ‘Clear’
- Read My Lips Lip Gloss in ‘Fluorescent Pink’
- Kiss ‘n’ Go Lipstick in ‘Doll Pink’
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a fan of white plastic products. White iPhones, white Wii consoles, white kitchen equipment all look slightly tacky in my eyes, so at first I wasn’t best pleased to see that Avon had replaced the traditional Colortrend black with white. However, when I saw the boxes and wrappers that everything came in, I changed my mind slightly. I love the colours, shapes and fonts that have been used, and I think they offset the white nicely so you hardly even notice it in the end. The Colortrend range is aimed at younger Avon users, and I definitely think the new look gives the products a more young, lighthearted and fun image than they had before, so in that respect the overhaul has been successful!
But what about the products themselves? Have they been improved? Well, I haven’t yet tried a lot of them (some of the items pictured above were for my customers) so I can’t comment on everything, but I have tried the Suede Effect Nail Enamel and Read My Lips Lip Gloss, so I will now give my thoughts on those…
Color Me Pretty Suede Effect Nail Enamel in ‘Soft Violet’ (RRP £3)
‘Soft Violet’ is a rich purple with a silver shimmer running through it. It is also matte, which combined with the shimmer gives it that ‘suede’ look, as does the fact that it feels almost soft to the touch! I really like the colour and it is very different to Avon’s other purple matte varnish, which is good as I find it quite annoying when a company have two very similar shades!
The consistency of the varnish is excellent, and a definite improvement on the old, runny Colortrend varnishes. It sits comfortably in the middle of thick and thin so it applies smoothly, with no streaks, and you can achieve an opaque look in just two coats, instead of the three or four it took before.
The only thing I was disappointed with was how long the varnish lasts. Because it is matte, I couldn’t apply a top coat as all of my top coats are glossy, so it chipped within a day on several nails, and the ends showed wear very quickly.
Despite the chipping, I am in love with this nail varnish. It’s a breath of fresh air within the previously rather basic Colortrend nail enamel collection, and it is much better quality than I was expecting too. There are two other suede nail enamels available (a blue and a pink), and twelve other glossy nail enamels, including two ‘morph’ colours which look a bit like Models Own Beetljuice range. Now I know how good the formula is, I will definitely be getting some more! Starting with ‘Fuschia Feel’ and ‘Vixen’.
Read My Lips Lip Gloss in ‘Clear’ (RRP £3.75)
On its own.
Whilst browsing the last Avon brochure I realised that (shock horror) I didn’t actually own a clear lip gloss! That needed fixing pronto, so I ordered this one as it was on offer for only 99p. When I first opened the tube I thought the gloss smelt a bit funny and it put me off a little. I made my mum sniff it and she liked the smell, so I guess that one’s just down to personal taste. The gloss applies quite thickly, but it isn’t too sticky which makes up for it, and gives a nice shine to naked lips. As you can see, I also applied it over matte lipstick and it really made my lips stand out. It made the lipstick stay on a LOT longer than it does without gloss, which I wasn’t expecting so was an added bonus!
Overall, despite my initial reservations with the change of packaging, I am glad that Avon have given the Colortrend range a new lease of life. I was getting a bit bored of seeing the same few shades over and over again, so the new products have come as a breath of fresh air for me. The shades are bold and exciting and I can’t wait to see and try more of them!
Will you be trying any of the new Colortrend products? If you fancy a browse of the new range, you can visit my Personal Online Brochure here. You can even place an order with me if you feel inclined to do so! Colortrend products are currently 2 for £4, so you can really grab a bargain right now
I have great news for my overseas readers… I am now shipping Avon orders to the rest of Europe and the USA!
As with my UK readers, you can now browse the latest UK Avon brochure by visiting the ‘Order Avon From Me’ page, or the Avon tab to the right of the main page, and follow the link provided. When you have decided what you want, just email email@example.com with your order details. I will then place your order and post it to you when it arrives! Easy as that.
Postage will be charged at standard Airmail rates, which will be calculated when I have weighed your order, and posted the same day. I suggest not ordering heavy items such as bubble bath and shampoo as this will bump the postage up, but make up items don’t weigh much at all luckily, so postage will cost as little as possible. Payment is to be made via PayPal (sent as a gift, so neither of us get charged :D).
So, overseas readers, if you don’t have an Avon Representative or you want to try any of the UK only Avon products, now’s your chance!
Good news, lovely readers! I am now running Avon’s NEW Brochure 8 and it is viewable online here. Don’t forget that I am a Trendsetter Representative, which means I am two brochures ahead of non-Trendsetter Reps, so you can check out new Avon products before everybody else! I run an online ordering service, so if you live in the UK and would like to place an order with me, just email firstname.lastname@example.org with the details of your order. I charge standard second class Royal Mail postage. For more information, click on the ‘Order Avon From Me’ page. All I ask is that I need your orders by Wednesday 21st March, and I will post your orders on Tuesday 27th March.
Brochure 8 celebrates 20 years of Avon’s ANEW skincare range so there are plenty of amazing offers for you to take advantage of, such as 3 for £20 on most ANEW products, saving you up to £35. You’ll also find a selection of half-price products throughout the brochure, as well as NEW items for Spring/Summer and 2 for £12, £10 or £8 on lots of make up. Keep an eye out for freebies too!
I hope you enjoy looking through the brochure If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask! I am, after all, your online Avon Representative and am here to help.
